Chapter Eight: On the Road Again

The wind whipped around me as I revved the throttle and shot around the semi-truck that was taking its time in the right lane. Livia, my unexpected but more than welcome passenger, squeezed tightly around my stomach. Her whoop of joy threatened to pierce my eardrum, but I gave the bike more juice, creeping closer to a hundred miles per hour. Her scream turned to a giggle when I let the bike slow back down to cruising speed. Even so, her tight hold around me remained, not that I’d have it any other way.

Once the shock of her appearance at the Tiki lounge wore off and we escaped the sting the Las Vegas Police Department had in store for me, my more cautious side urged me to consider her. I mean, the girl followed me to my meeting with the cartel, even if I had realized it wasn’t an authentic meet. She was a dangerous unknown, one that had my danger sense tingling. That she clocked the cops and had the wherewithal to help me escape them brought up a few more red flags. None of the girls in the hotel suite reacted to stumbling on my gun the way I expected, either. It left them nonplussed.

Like a surfer hitting the waves before a hurricane rolled in, I ignored those red flag warnings. Adrenaline played its part as it always did in any nearly catastrophic situation. Had I not found Livia so alluring, I’d have been halfway back to Stockton by now—alone, of course.

“Faster,” Livia screamed over the roar of the wind.

I gunned the engine. The speedometer inched toward a hundred miles per hour. Her arms squeezed tighter, and another giggle burst from her lips. As much as I had to do when I got back to Stockton, including confronting Gunner about the trap he sent me into, nobody expected me back before tomorrow afternoon. My new passenger offered a pleasant distraction to those future problems.

When my bike began to shake as we topped a hundred, I didn’t pull back like before. Livia’s giggle turned into a cackle the longer I kept the throttle open. I cursed my inability to fix that issue before now. If she got this excited from growing a hundred, I wondered what she would do if I pushed it up to one-twenty?

Before reaching Tonopah with its curious and creepy attractions, I pulled off the highway to gas up. Being unused to riding a bike, I figured Livia might need to stretch her legs a bit, too. She didn’t loosen her hold until I brought the bike to a complete stop in front of the pumps. Once her hands slid away from my stomach, I kicked down the stand and stretched off the bike. When Livia followed, she stood on her tiptoes and extended her arms as high as she could reach to stretch out.

“That was amazing,” she all but yelled, still expecting the deafening roar of the wind. “Sorry about that.
